Benchmarking for Success

Kingdom Benchmarking helps maritime and related clients to answer two questions:

  • “What is world best practice in our field? How well do the best perform?”
  • “How much closer can WE get to best practice – and is it worth trying?”

After successful corporate careers, we have been advising companies since 1985.

Kingdom Benchmarking is a company founded in 2011 by Robin Hirsch, Peter Baker, Kent Lassacher-Busk and Edwin Dekker, primarily to bring to ports and terminals the experience from 38 years of benchmarking in various asset-intensive industries across the world.

Kent Lassacher-Busk and Edwin Dekker’s experience include such projects as heading the planning, procurement, and implementation of a new terminal operating system (TOS) for the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, and a programme of productivity enhancement and change management to get the most out of the new technology:

Their projects included optimising the container terminal layout; analysing capacity constraints; specifying and procuring a container and Ro-Ro terminal operating system; redesigning the organisation and operating processes; and assisting the port with the necessary change management. It resulted in higher capacity, 9-11% higher crane and equipment productivity and utilisation, lower staffing costs, faster truck turnaround times and a higher level of customer service.

Robin Hirsch has been benchmarking industries as diverse as electricity companies, automotive manufacturers, logistics and distribution companies over 38 years. The largest single project saving was expected to be achieved by London Underground:

London Underground commented in August 2010 about a recent study:

“ We now expect that it will lead to escalator asset management savings in the region of £0.5 billion over the next 22 years. This could not have happened without the insights from this study and the dedication, expertise and perseverance of Robin Hirsch and his team, together with the work of our own engineers.”

The study involved a global comparison of the specification, maintenance, refurbishment and life extension methods for a single class of assets. It included comparisons of productivity, asset condition monitoring methods and quality and availability outcomes.

London Underground is by no means our first client to measure the benefits of our projects in hundreds of millions of pounds or dollars. Most of the larger savings have come from better asset management and changes in organisation structures and methods.
